Do You Have “Peace Of Mind”?

Have you ever overhead a person say this? “How in the world can I enjoy any peace in my life when all I ever see is trouble?” Maybe from time to time you also have said or at least thought this way yourself.

Is it possible today, in this world we live in, to really enjoy true peace that lasts longer than a few fleeting moments?

Of course, the answer is yes, but getting to that yes means a little work, a little self-control, a little help from a power greater than our own self. But we can get there, we can have lasting peace.

Even in this world of hatred, violence and war, we can enjoy lasting peace that surpasses all human understanding. But why is peace so elusive? What is peace anyway?

Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, and justice.

General Douglas MacArthur said at the end of World War II: “Men since the beginning of time have sought peace. Various methods through the ages have been attempted to devise an international process to prevent or settle disputes between nations. Military alliances, balances of power, league of nations, all in turn failed, leaving the only path to be the way of the crucible of war.” Then he said “it must be of the spirit, if we are to save the flesh.”

That is the key to lasting peace. The way to peace is through the spirit, not the flesh. So why, then, doesn’t man just change his attitude and practice peace with his brother?

Because there is a mighty force at work on this planet whose avowed purpose is to annihilate human life from this planet.

Satan is the author of contentions, fightings and war. Jesus Christ tells us “Satan’s purpose is only to steal, and to kill and to destroy” (John 10:10).

It has been Satan that has influenced men to argue, fight, war and kill one another. He has deceived the nations into thinking that might makes right and that survival of the fittest is the way to peace.

History proves that man has never invented a weapon he has not used. Unless God intervenes soon, man is doomed to destroy himself.

Where does this leaves you and me? Is there some way whereby we can overcome Satan’s influence, which taints our thoughts and sways our actions?

Just before Christ’s death, he explained to his disciples: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).

In other words Christ’s peace is different from this world’s brand of peace. Christ’s peace surpasses human understanding. It guards our hearts and minds (Phil. 4:7). It is based on God’s great purpose. That purpose for humanity is that we enjoy eternal life in peace.

The apostle Paul tells us “That God is the author of peace” (I Cor. 14:33).

How can we receive, enjoy and practice God’s peace? Remember, that Jesus Christ is the “Prince of Peace,” and He is willing to give us God’s lasting peace.

But we need to go to God and ask for it, it is a fruit of God’s Holy Spirit.

Humility precedes peace. Humility is the opposite of pride. And pride breeds contention (Prov. 13:10).

David wrote “Depart from evil, and go good, seek peace, and pursue it” (Ps. 34:14). When our ways please God, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him (Prov. 16:7).

We honor God by obeying His Ten Commandments, which define the way of peace. “Great peace have those who love Your Law, and nothing causes them to stumble” (Ps. 119:165).

Peacemakers are powerful people, they please God and persuade men. Because they are meek; they shall “inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace” (Ps. 37:11).

This is how we can enjoy lasting peace in the midst of hatred, violence and war. God the Father sent His Son, the Prince of Peace, to give His peace to us in the Church, now, and soon the rest of mankind. God has called us to be peacemakers, love Him for it, rejoice in it and pass His peace on to others.
