Hello everyone! Very good to see all of you here today for God’s weekly Sabbath observance. As you may remember, the annual Sabbath, Pentecost, was observed June 8 this year and that’s almost two months ago. Now, we are speeding toward the Fall Festivals of “Trumpets”, “Atonement” and “The Feast of Tabernacles” followed by the “Last Great Day. It seems like time “fly’s” as we get closer to these events. We begin to “emphasize” these days to help build the “excitement”! Jesus Christ used this method when teaching His disciples. Notice what it tells us about His preparing them for their mission, before the Day of Pentecost. John 20:21 “Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: As my Father hath sent me, EVEN SO SEND I YOU. 22. And when He had said this, HE BREATHED ON THEM, and saith unto them , RECEIVE YE THE HOLY GHOST (SPIRIT).”
What is the meaning of verse 22? Pentecost was still fifty days ahead and the Holy spirit was not given until that day! Some have wrongly assumed that this was the moment when Christ gave the Holy Spirit to His Apostles. That isn’t the case at all! Notice! Acts 2:1 “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2. And suddenly there came a SOUND FROM HEAVEN AS OF A RUSHING MIGHTY WIND, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.” Here we see the fulfillment and meaning of John 20:22: “--“He breathed on them”--.
The Greek word for BREATHED is “EMPHUNSEO”, which is much like our English word “EMPHASIZE”! Another Greek word which seems to be closely connected, is “EMPHANIZO” which can be translated, “declare plainly”, “inform” or “show”. From this information, Christ was showing or emphasizing THE SOUND OF A RUSHING MIGHTY WIND, which would come on the Day of Pentecost. He merely used His mouth and blew His breath STRONGLY on His disciples! It was a colorful, descriptive demonstration of what to expect when it came! Remember what He had told them in Luke 24:49 “And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, UNTIL YE BE ENDUED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH.” That promise was reiterated in Acts 1:4 “And being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but WAIT for the promise of the Father, which saith he, ye have of me. 5. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit NOT MANY DAYS HENCE.”
So the Holy Spirit most certainly was given on the Day of Pentecost and it came in the fashion Christ said it would!
