The Contrast Between Lying And Truth

I was talking with several men this past week and the subject come up about God’s attitude about lying. I suppose I still had that on my mind when I received the idea for this brief article because I remembered a Scripture about how God lists lying as one of the most detestable sins to Him:

Proverbs 6:16 “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination to Him. 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood.” He even points out this sin twice, in this passage: Verse 19 “A false witness that speaketh lies…”

Why do you suppose that He feels this way toward this sin? Could it be because of the originator of it?

John 8:43 “Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word? 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

Contrast this with what we read in Chapter 17, where Jesus was praying, in front of His disciples on Passover evening.

John 17:16 “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

God’s punishment is swift and just on liars:

Acts 5 :1 “But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles feet. 3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost (Spirit), and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? And after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came upon them that heard these things.” Verses 9-10 tells us, his wife suffered the same penalty.

A habitual, unrepentant liar will suffer a far worse fate; this will cost him his eternal life and the second death in Gehenna fire!

Revelation 21:8 “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, AND ALL LIARS, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

LIARS, BEWARE! God is watching and listening!
