You know, we human beings have the ability to project or use our minds in ways that are well advanced over the animal kingdom. We can plan ahead, think about certain projects we need to get accomplished at the present, or think back on things of the past. Or, sometimes, we can just let our minds wander around in no certain direction - just musing or contemplating things that are really of no real importance. Or, are our thoughts important?
We have expressions such as: “a penny for your thoughts” or “what’s on your mind?” Well, what is on your mind? Are you in control of your mind? Are you using it for right and useful purposes?
There used to be an advertisement extolling the virtues and need of a college education. I believe its slogan was, “a mind is a terrible thing to waste”. God’s Word agrees with that!
Proverbs 30:32 “If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thine mouth.”
Yes, we need to control our thoughts! It has been said: “the carnal mind is envy, jealousy, lust, and greed! And that’s true! Notice what God tells us: Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart (mind) is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Also in Isaiah 55:8: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.”
Jesus Christ prophesied and gave warnings of things that would be happening in our time: Matthew 24:37 “But as the days of No’e were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” What was one of the earmarks of that generation, before the flood? Genesis 6:5 “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of HIS HEART WAS ONLY EVIL continually.”
BUT WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO CHANGE!
God gives us instructions on HOW to do this: Philippians 2:5 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” This is accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit! Our starting place is here: Philippians 4:8 “Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there are any praise, THINK ON THESE THINGS.”
In this present evil world, it’s difficult to follow these instructions. But we need to be striving for these goals. Get your mind out of the gutter! Try to steer clear of thoughts that aren’t wholesome or holy! Christians should be in the process of having their mind transformed: Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.”
Finally; don’t think you are fooling God! Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
God knows what’s on your mind!
