I have a question for you today: “Did Jesus Christ have long hair as He is portrayed in many paintings, Bibles, etc.?” We’ll look at Scriptures that will shed some light on this subject.
First of all, was He a Nazarite and under the VOW that these persons were obligated to take?
Numbers 6: 1 - 5 (Read the rest of this separation vow chapter. These persons had to take this vow to consecrate them for this special period of time in service to God.)
(Notice some other examples that seem to indicate being under a Nazarite vow: Samson in Judges 13:3 and Samuel the Profit/Judge in I Samuel 1:11)
Some have confused this word, “Nazarite” with the “Nazarene”, meaning people who were from “Nazareth”, as Jesus was. Mark 10:47 “And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.”
So you see how that some have mistakenly thought that Jesus would have long hair and confused the term, “Nazarite” with “Nazarene”. But even then, we should not have these “so called” pictures or replicas of Jesus, because it would be breaking the Second Commandment!
Exodus 20:4 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:”
What was Christ’s teachings, through Paul’s writings, on hair length? I Corinthians 11:14 “Doth not nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him. 15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.”
Did Jesus ever drink wine or did He allow His people any use of alcohol? Matthew 11:19 “The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber…”
(Psalms 104:15 “And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil that maketh his face to shine, and bread that strengtheneth the man’s heart.” Would God’s Word advocate anything harmful to man? What was Christ’s first miracle? John 2:1 - 7, 10 (About 18 “firkins” or 9 gallons x 18 = 160 gallons of wine.) Those under the Nazarite vow could not drink wine!
In conclusion we see that Jesus was NOT A NAZARITE and so did not require wearing long hair as a part of that vow of abstention. So I would suggest that you rid yourself of those long- haired, effeminate pictures or images (even in your minds) of this “OTHER JESUS” taught by false religions, as in II Corinthians 11:4 “For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus (with long hair?), whom we’ve not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.“
