When Jesus Christ returns, He is going to give people (spirit beings) authority in God’s Kingdom. Notice Luke 19:12-13; 15-17 “A certain nobleman went into a far country (this is talking about Jesus Christ going back to heaven) to receive for himself a kingdom and to return (notice Daniel 7:13-14).
“And he called his ten servants, and delivered then ten pounds (about three months salary) and said unto them, occupy (do business) till I come. (Verses 15-17) And it came to pass, that when he (Christ) was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. Then came the first, saying Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds. And he said unto him, well done, thou good servant: because thou has been faithful in very little, have thou authority over ten cities.”
Have you ever wondered how you will be able to manage part of God’s government? As you read this article, I want you to use your imagination and travel forward in time a few years. I want you to picture the Millennium. Jesus Christ has returned and you, and the rest of God’s Church, have been born into His family, and some people have been raised from the dead.
Now for the first time all God’s chosen people stand before our powerful and triumphant elder brother Jesus Christ, and we are waiting to receive our position in the New World Government. Now it is your turn, as you come before Christ you can feel the power radiating from Him. You now understand why the ancient House of Israel trembled with fear, when they first saw the signs of His presence at Mount Sinai!
But you have nothing to fear, in fact, you can look directly into those shining eyes more brilliant than a thousand suns. You now realize that Jesus Christ knows your name, He knows who you are, and it is as though He has been anticipating this moment also.
And then, with a voice more powerful than the most powerful waterfall, but with warmth and enthusiasm, Christ says the word all of have been waiting to hear: “Well done, you good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in the things I have given you to do, you have overcome and you endured to the end. Welcome to the Kingdom of God.” And then He says: “I am going to give you authority over ten cities.”
A dream, yes, but it is a realistic dream of all of God’s children. It is a dream that will one day come true! Just plain ordinary people – people such as construction workers, farmers, truck drivers, housewives, people of every day walks of life, ruling over a city.
But what do you and I know about running a city? What do you and I know about running a large city or a small town? Water and power must be provided, streets and roads must be planned and building codes must be established. Garbage must be collected; the disposal of sewage must be arranged. Yes, there will be physical, flesh and blood, human beings alive during the Millennium! We must be prepared to provide for them.
What do you do about transportation, a school system, shops and places of entertainment? Money must be appropriated for the thousands of expenses needed to keep a town or city running properly. What in the world do you and I know about all these things? Some of the best minds in the world today can’t make our cities and towns work. Most of them are running in the red and some are bankrupt. So what makes you think you are going to do any better in the New World to come, how can you teach what you don’t know?
This article is not to discourage you; you see the world that Jesus Christ returns to will need urgent help. This whole world will be battered from Satan’s rule and horribly chastened by the Day of the Lord.
The Books of Daniel and Revelation tell us that the Great Tribulation and the trumpet plagues will devastate civilization. Communication networks will be in ruin, transportation will have been broken down, dams will have been destroyed, and bridges will have collapsed. The infrastructures of all cities will be destroyed.
These once great cities will be nothing but smoking piles of rubble. The ecosystem will have been badly damage. But starting from Jerusalem the healing and rebuilding will commence.
The people that will be alive after the return of Christ will come to Jerusalem, maybe there will be mayors who ran large cities, or governors or presidents, great people will come to seek help form Jesus Christ.
“And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain (government) of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob (Israel); and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths; for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem” (Isa. 2:3).
Now what these people are going to find is that the Kingdom or government of God will be eager to help. Not only that but this government will be competent to help. The team or family of God will have the expertise necessary to show humanity how to live.
Now those of us, who have been called, are now in the process of qualifying to be a part of that team, to learn how to help people in the New World to come.
How many of you that is reading this article has had experience in running a city? Probably the answer is no one, then how will you be ready? Did God make a mistake in choosing you? This is what the Apostle Paul says about the Church: “God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty” (I Cor. 1:2).
Then did God make a mistake in calling us to quality for His government? Why didn’t he call mayors and governors who have had experience in running a state or city? Why didn’t He call able civil engineers, town-planning experts, telecommunication operators and those with big business and large construction projects expertise?
But instead we have “not many wise men, not many mighty or noble are called.” God calling people like us, is that going to be a big mistake? The answer is no, Christ knows exactly what He is doing, when He returns His world-ruling team will be ready and able to rule.
“Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready” (Rev. 19:7). Christ’s team will be ready and able to take over the reigns of this world.
How is this going to be possible, we need to remind ourselves again just how this world has gone wrong? For 6,000 years, since Adam and Eve rejected the kind of knowledge that could have come from God, the human race has tried just about every form of government or way of life there is. The human race has failed in every aspect except one; we have been quite adequate in solving technical problems, and especially in the last 100 years or so. And we can see how technology has transformed this world.
Man can harness the power of mighty rivers, string bridges across great spans, build highways, railroads over soaring mountains and deserts. We can drill for oil beneath the Arctic ice, split the atom, replace body parts such as the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys and travel into space.
Now along with all this physical knowledge comes massive destruction, so at the beginning of the Millennium, people will finally learn that physical knowledge did not produce a way of life that worked. That’s why Isaiah was inspired to write “Let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, he will teach us of his ways.”
We all know that if God the Father didn’t send His Son back to this world, all that physical knowledge would destroy this planet and all flesh on it. God will not allow man to blindly start rebuilding. Christ will restore the government of God to show mankind God’s way of life, to teach God’s laws.
This is exactly what nations will go to Jerusalem to learn, because if they already knew this knowledge, there would be no reason for them to go to Jerusalem. The nations of this world do not know anything about the true way of life, they must be taught from the beginning, like little children.
But do you know it? We should know how to live, but are we, are we learning how to live God’s way all the time. Is the Holy Spirit teaching us to live a sharing, cooperating helping humanity and loving our neighbor as ourselves?
This is the way God lives, and we are supposed to be lead by His Spirit. Is that not what Paul tells us in Romans 8:14, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God?”
But at the moment, you probably only have the opportunity to live that way of life on a small scale. You have only a small family, and maybe just an average job, your income isn’t great, or you just have a small plot of land to take care of. How can we qualify to rule a city, to tackle the complex administrative, organizational and personal problems that come up all the time when several thousand families live together?
Do you know why you can do this, that you can run a large city? Because the world today is not as complex as it seems. The world simply has not understood the nature of the problems. The apostle James showed the real cause of strife in the world: “From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members. Ye lust, and have not; Ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not” (James 4:1-2).
In other words, our problems are caused by human nature expressed in jealousy, resentment, vanity, lust and greed. The struggles between nations today are really only small problems grown big, and out of control.
The problems of two major powers locked in a hot war may seem more complex than two neighbors fighting over a backyard fence. But it is essentially the same. They know of no better way to settle a dispute, whether it’s nations or individuals.
Paul tells us: “The way of peace they have not known” (Rom. 3:17). It only makes sense, that if the cause is the same, then the solution is the same; that of love, tolerance, forgiveness, sharing, helping and giving. This way produces peace, happiness and prosperity. This way will work between people, given the opportunity, and it would work with nations.
Brethren, do you now understand that Jesus Christ doesn’t have to see you in action on a large scale to know whether you know how to administer the laws that lead to peace. Christ sees it now, by the way you and I solve the problems of our life.
In spite of our limited experiences, we will have the ability to teach others the way of peace in the New World to come. God doesn’t need to see you ruling over10 cities to determine whether you know how to apply and observe His laws.
He knows by the simple decisions we make every day of our life, whether we will obey Him or go the way of the world.
For example, how does a husband and wife or children solve problems? By shouting, yelling and expressing bad attitudes? Or are we showing God that we know a better way. What about finances? Would you handle the treasury of a city like so many rulers do today, by enriching yourself at other’s expense?
God can tell by the way we handle our employer’s money, and the way we spend our time at work, and by our attitude toward taxes that we must render to our government, by what you do with God’s tithes.
“And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s who shall give you that which is your own? (v. 10) He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful in that which is much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much” (Luke 16:12). In other words, if we learn to be faithful and loyal in small things, God knows that you will be that way when given much greater responsibilities.
The parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-19 shows that some people in God’s Church can’t be trusted with proper rulership.
The decisions required to live God’s way are really very simple, they are basically a matter of saying yes or no to God’s laws. Now that isn’t all that complicated is it?
Look how God tested Adam and Eve; it wasn’t some gigantic, complex problem to see whether or not they would be obedient. He tested them in one of the most basis areas: What were they going to eat? They gave in to temptation and ate of the forbidden fruit. How easy was the decision God gave them, could anything have been simpler?
You and I can’t be too quick to judge Adam and Eve, how many times have we made the wrong decisions. Let’s face the facts; we don’t have to be a dictator to prove that we are unsuitable to rule over others.
The way we treat our spouses, our children, our friends, next door neighbors, will show God what kind of ruler we will be. How many in God’s Church are short-tempered, hard to get along with, rebellious, uncooperative, and unfair?
This is what Christ needs to know now, before He trusts us with a major responsibility over many peoples. The Kingdom of God is going to bring peace to the world, not more strife. We must be showing God that we are learning the way of peace.
Let’s face it, how many leaders of today are interested in learning the way of pace. These rulers today would consider it foolish, unrealistic and just too simplistic. Their quest for peace and prosperity will be to continue to split the atom, developing greater machines, treaties that will be broken and wonderful inventions of science that will somehow be turned into weapons of destruction. This world, based on physical knowledge, is destined to come crashing down.
In the Millennium, the knowledge of God’s way of life will begin to fill the earth like the waters cover the ocean beds (Isa. 11:9). People will begin to rebuild, and if they start to make a mistake, someone will say: “This is the way, walk in it, whenever you turn to the right hand, or whenever you turn to the left (Isa. 30:21).
Do we in God’s Church understand that we as teachers can’t teach what we don’t know? God’s future teachers must know God’s law and the way to peace. If you and I make it into God’s kingdom, then Jesus Christ will reward us with complete confidence and with authority to rule, we will have power to use that authority.
The choices you will have to make will be on a much larger scale than now, but you and I will still make decisions the same way, knowing right from wrong. Armed with that knowledge and that power, God’s chosen people will be able to rule a city, five cities and even ten cities in the way of peace, for a thousand years. Are you preparing to rule?
