As you know, there are all kinds of religious ideas out there in this Satanic world. Some are so ridiculous and weird as to be almost unbelievable. But we see people following just about anything or everything. Some of these “wildfire” or “Pentecostal” groups go from handling snakes (serpents), drinking deadly poisons, speaking in “tongues”, gyrating around, in sometimes sensuous dances -you may have seen some of this on T.V or maybe in some religious meeting. One of the “desires” of some of these folks is to “receive the “baptism of fire. Is this something we, as Christians should want?
What about this “Baptism of fire”?
Turn with me to the Book of Matthew 3:1 “In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, Repent ye for the kingdom of God is at hand. 6. And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins 8. Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance. 10. And now therefore the ax is laid unto the root of the trees, therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire (Hell fire). 11. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but He that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am worthy to bear: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost (Spirit), and with fire (Gr. “Gehenna” or hell). 12. Whose fan is in his hand, and He will thoroughly purge (cleanse) His floor, and gather His wheat (Christians) into the garner; but He will burn up ( by the baptism of fire ) the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Again, some have been led to believe this is something to be greatly desired. They believe this is one of the manifestations of having God’s Holy Spirit. They actually consider it a blessing! I want to give you 4 brief points to clarify what John the Baptist was actually speaking of:
He was not talking to Christians. Ver.8.
John was baptizing with water--Christ with fire!
Verse 12 reveals it to be fire that will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” Look at, Jude 7 “Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication , and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”
In the O.T., there is a reference to this same kind of fire: Malachi. 4:1 “For the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. 2. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness (Christ) arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. 3. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.”
(I want to interject something here, of great importance: Notice this “hell fire”, described here in the Bible, and that is what this is speaking of, a fire that burns up the wicked, not blisters, fries or torments them forever. The Hell fire of the Bible is much hotter than the Hell of the figment of men’s imagination. That false idea is an adoption or acceptance of the writings of one Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet (1265-1321 AD). One of his most famous works is the, “(Divina) Commedia” or “(Divine) Comedy”. The story opens in the early morning of the Friday before Easter, in the year 1300. Then it goes on to describe the horrible suffering and torment of those who are assigned to this fictional Hell. Of course I’ll not try to give you a full book review of the “Commedia” but you can get this information of this man’s work of fiction, this man’s ideas of an ever burning, ever tormenting hell fire, from several reliable encyclopedias. I got my information from, “Encyclopedia Britannica”, Volume 7. You can prove to yourself, that the Church of Rome adopted and accepted these fictional ideas and changed them to appear as Christian! The Protestants (daughters) accepted them as well! (Revelation 17:5). I realize this is a digression to the subject of “Hell”, which in itself is a major study, but this is important!! )
Now let’s look at another Scripture. Jeremiah 17: 27 describes that same “unquenchable” fire that we read of in Matthew 3. “But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the Sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day; then I will kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.” Jerusalem isn’t still burning! So “unquenchable fire” is one that is not quenched nor “put out” by anything or anyone. When the combustible material is totally consumed it goes out on its own. The smoke and ash continue to ascend on up into the atmosphere and dissipate. Psalms 37:20 “But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.”
The final point I want to make is that this “baptism of fire” is actually talking about the second death!
Malachi 4:1--3 told us the wicked are to be burned up into ashes! We certainly do not want that fate!
You should NOT desire The BAPTISM of FIRE!
