Monthly Letter - February-March 2009

February - March 2009

Greetings Everyone,

Next month, April 8th, is Passover. What does that mean to you? What does it mean to the average American? How many people, other than some of the Jewish faith, could even tell you when it is or what it is about?

The book of Exodus records Israel’s departure from Egypt. You may recall the story of Joseph being sold into slavery by his brothers and then taken into Egypt as a slave. God blessed him and raised him to the rank of second in command over the mighty nation of Egypt. Joseph’s family came to Egypt after they were forced from their homeland by a famine. Joseph was reunited with his family and they resided in peace in Egypt during their lifetime.

However, after a process of time a new Pharaoh came into power and he was not so favorable to the Israelites. They were growing in numbers and he feared they may revolt against his leadership. Therefore, he made slaves of them. For many years the Israelites were slaves to the Egyptians. They learned the Egyptian ways. They forgot the ways of God which Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph had followed. They worshipped the gods of Egypt.

God heard their cries for deliverance. He sent Moses to deliver them from Egypt. They went out of Egypt with a high hand. How many churches teach this amazing story today? Very few! Why? Because it does not fit into the Easter story. However, it is a story that is of tremendous significance to mankind today. But how and why is it significant? Let’s understand.

Before God took them out of Egypt He performed a tremendous miracle. God told Moses to have all the Israelites slay a tiny lamb and take its blood and put the blood over the doorposts of their homes. That night God killed the firstborn of all those in Egypt except the firstborn in the homes with the blood over the doorposts. The Lord “passed over” the homes with the blood over the doorposts and spared their lives. (You may read this account in Exodus 12: 1-24).

Though few realize it, this “Passover” was a type of the process of salvation for all mankind. Approximately 1500 years later another “Passover” was to take place, fulfilling the meaning of the “Passover” outlined in the twelfth chapter of Exodus.

In the book of Revelation John was inspired to write, “And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes…” (Rev. 5:6). “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation…” (Rev. 5:9). The tiny lamb slain by the Israelites was a type of Jesus Christ. Just as the blood from the lamb placed over the doorposts of their homes saved them from the destroyer, so the blood of the lamb of God (John 1:29) would redeem mankind back to God. Jesus Christ became our Passover. (I Cor. 5:7).

The New Testament Church is commanded to observe the “Passover” annually in remembrance of Christ’s death. (I Cor. 11:26). The apostle Paul outlined the ceremony we are to perform every year in I Cor. 11: 23-26. Read it for yourself. He said, “this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me”. (verse 25). Christ said those who failed to observe the “Passover” would miss out on Eternal Life. (John 6: 53-58). That is why the “Passover” is so significant. Your very Eternal Life is at stake.

Accompanying this letter is our quarterly Newsletter. I would encourage you to read it throughout several times. You must prepare to take the “Passover” (I Cor. 11: 26-29). It is not something you take lightly. You must come to grips with the significance of the Lord“s death. His life was given for you and me. If you have access to our website, www.cognwm.org, you should read the article “The Man Who Died to Make Men Free.” If this article doesn’t help you get prepared nothing will.

This month we will be offering the following sermon messages for your admonition: “What is Religion?”, “Overcoming”, and “It is Not in Me.” Those of you on our monthly DVD mailing list will be receiving DVD’s for “Passover Service”, and the First and Last Days of Unleavened Bread.

We have included in this mailing two Holy Day envelopes for your convenience. God requires an offering on each of His Holy Days. (Deut. 16: 16-17). Certainly, one “...shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God which he hath given thee.” (verse 17).

My friends, we are living in troubled times. Just as Paul was inspired to write in 2 Timothy 3:1. No one knows how the horrible economic conditions we are presently experiencing are going to turn out. However, if we follow the course of past history, warfare is sure to follow. The nations are angry and will become even angrier. They will not sit idly by and watch their economies collapse. Watch for trade wars to begin. Watch, as nations begin to implement “protectionism” tactics to protect their own economies. Watch the European Union as the nations bind together “out of necessity” (Rev. 17: 12-13). Watch the Headline News found on our website. Watch and pray! Do not neglect your prayer and Bible study. And, thank you all for your prayers and support.

Sincerely,
George Trent
