Monthly Letter - January-February 2014

28 February 2014

Greetings Everyone,

I just finished reading a four part article titled The History of the Church of God. It has now been posted on our church website. I had read this article many years ago but this time it seemed to be even more inspiring than the first time I read it! Here’s why:

I grew up in a small coal mining community in West Virginia. There was only one church in the community. It was Methodist. However, there were other nearby coal mining communities, and each had a church. Some were Pentecostal, others were Baptist, Catholic or some other denomination. I never stopped to ask why there were so many different denominations and why all these people who called themselves “Christian” had different beliefs.

I, like all the other denominations, observed Sunday as my day of worship. I had read in Exodus 20:8-11: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” We had a plaque hanging on the wall in our home with the ten commandments on it. I never questioned which day was the Sabbath. It wasn’t until I was 28 years old that my wife began studying literature she had received from the Worldwide Church of God. I began reading these articles and looking up the scriptures in my Bible. I was amazed to learn that the Sabbath day was to be observed on the 7th day of the week. The day we called Saturday. I further learned that it was to be observed from sundown on Friday evening to sundown on Saturday evening. That presented a big problem for me as I was a high school basketball coach and most of our games were on Tuesdays and Fridays. I tried every way to prove the Sabbath wrong. But I could not!

I knew if I observed the Sabbath it was going to turn my world upside down. However, I could not get out of my mind that I was breaking the Sabbath. In March 1970 I resigned as coach and sought baptism. I do not regret the decision! And now, after forty three years of being a member of God’s True Church, I have read an article I read many years ago and it inspires me even more.

Christ said to His apostles in Matthew 16:18, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Some have erred in believing Christ was going to build his Church on Peter. That is not true at all! Christ is the Rock (I Cor. 10:4). Peter is only a small stone (Greek for Peter). Christ is the head of the church (Col. 1:18). And the gates of hell (Greek “Hades” - the grave) cannot destroy it. Christ proclaimed that His Church would always exist and that He would be with it even till the end of the world (age) (Mat. 28:20).

The article inspired me as I followed the History of the Church from the twelve apostles and Paul, through the centuries down to our present day. It encouraged me to read of those who went before me as they observed the same Sabbath I observe today. They suffered horrible persecution, losing all their possessions and in many cases their lives. The most powerful nations on earth tried to stamp it out, but failed! God’s words rang true, “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

I wonder how many of you are still in the same condition I was in. I knew the Sabbath was the day God commanded man to observe but I did not want to disrupt my lifestyle. If you truly want to obey your Lord and Saviour read the following passage of scripture from your Bible- Matthew 10:32-39. After reading that scripture you may want to read Mat. 7:21-27.

During my Christian walk I have lost family members, friends, jobs, and have suffered severe tests and trials along the way. But, I would not have it any other way. When God called me I was 28 years old. I am now 71 going on 72. There is not a day that goes by that I do not thank God for my calling. Now that I am in the latter years of my life I cling to His words of promise and hope, “And he that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations”. And, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in His throne.” (Rev. 2:26; 3:21).

The apostle Paul said, “Yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” (Phil 3:8-9). Paul said, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded:” (Phil 3:14-15).

We all have a choice! All those saints who endured to their end made a choice. Paul said, “And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect” (Heb. 11:39 -40). So, what choice will you make? Will you choose this temporary world’s pleasures or join the saints in eternal life? For me, it was the best choice I ever made!

Thank you all for your continued prayers and financial support. We are reaching thousands of people from countries around the world with the gospel of Christ. It is a life changing message.

Sincerely,
George Trent
