Bible Q & A

Q. You say that the Bible says you should not eat pork and shellfish, but do you believe what Christ said — that what goes into your body does not defile it, but what comes out of it does?

A. Absolutely! We believe it because it is scripture. Matthew 15:11, Christ, said, “Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.” Christ was referring to the disciples “not washing their hands prior to eating”. The Jews considered that to be a great sin. Christ responded by saying what he said in verse 11 above.

The quote you referred to about eating whatsoever was set before you is found in Luke 10:8. Notice verse 7, Christ said he was going to send them out to preach the gospel two by two. He advised them not to take money with them but to eat what the people they were going to visit would give them. Who were they going to visit? JEWS! The way of salvation had NOT been opened to the Gentiles yet. That did not come until after Christ died. The Jews were strict in observing the dietary laws established by God in Deuteronomy 14 and Leviticus 11. Notice Acts 10:14, “Peter said, Not so Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” Was Peter a liar? No, he wasn’t. Eating unclean foods was NEVER an issue with the apostles. A pig is a pig. A cow is a cow. According to God’s word, one is unclean, the pig, and one is clean, the cow. Christ said, “I change not. The same yesterday, today and forever.” The fact that Christ was nailed to a stake did not change the makeup of a pig and make it clean to eat.
