Bible Q & A

Q. Romans 6:23 says "For the wages of sin is death". Since there is no death without sin, why did Abel merit death?

A. Thank you for your question. It is a question many have wondered about.

We read in Hebrews 9:27 that it is appointed unto man once to die. That is a fate we all must face. Some die from natural causes, other from accidents, some are killed in wars, and some are even murdered. Regardless of how we die, it is a fate all men must face.

However, the death in Romans 6:23 is talking about the “second death” (Revelation 20:13-15).Those who have had an opportunity for salvation and rejected it will experience the second death. Examples of those who experience this death are found in Rev. 21:8. The second death is a death in which there is no hope for life again. The wicked will be burned up and become ashes under the souls of the feet of the righteous (Mal. 4: 1-3).
