Bible Q & A

Q. Genesis 26:5 says “because Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws” Does this mean that Abraham observed the Torah before it was revealed ...Before Mount Sinai?

A. It will take a few scriptures to answer your question.

What is sin? (I John 3:4). Sin is the transgression of the law. The law consists of The Ten Commandments, along with the statutes and judgments. The law has always existed. (Genesis 4:7). God told Cain that “sin lieth at your door.” Again, what is sin? Sin is the transgression of the law. For sin to lie at Cain’s door the law had to exist.

Genesis 13:13 and Genesis 18:20 indicts Sodom and Gomorrah for their “sins”. Again, the law had to exist for the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah to break it.

Abraham knew Melchizedek, king of Salem. Melchizedek was a priest of the most high God. (Gen. 14:17-18).Verses 19-20 reveals Abram paid tithes to Melchizedek. Tithing is one of the principles of God’s law. No doubt Abraham was taught God’s law by Melchizedek. The scripture you quoted, Gen. 26:5, reveals Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes and My laws.

The children of Israel were slaves in Egypt for several hundred years. During this time they forgot God’s law that was obeyed by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God had to reeducate them toward His law. Notice Exodus 16:4. God gave the Israelites manna for six days. They were not to gather manna on the Sabbath (The fourth commandment). But notice, what God said, “I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them whether they will walk in my law, or not.” God’s law was in existence before God gave the commandments to Moses in Exodus 20.

The answer to your question is YES, Abraham observed the Torah before it was revealed to the Israelites at Mount Sinai. The law of God has existed from the beginning.

You may think about the following scriptures as well: I John 4:8 says God is love. God is eternal. Paul said in Romans 13:10, “Love is the fulfilling of the law.” If God is love and God is eternal then the law must be eternal as well.
