Thanksgiving

Just ahead of us we’ll be observing the National Holiday, Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of the month. It is observed throughout the United States as an occasion for family reunions, bountiful dinners and festivities in the home with our families and friends. But, it should also be a religious observance, set apart to give thanks to Almighty God, for the blessings of the past year.

The origin of the holiday has been attributed to a Thanksgiving festival held by the Plymouth colony in December, 1621. Native fruits and vegetables, wild turkeys and pumpkin pies became traditional foods for the day.

Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt have all made official proclamations establishing this day as a National holiday, finally settling on the fourth Thursday of November.

I believe the intent and meaning of the day is truly a wonderful thought in keeping with the principle of God’s Word. We should always be thankful to the One who has given us this nation, and us, as individuals, such tremendous blessings! But, sadly, many have forgotten the purpose of this day - to truly thank the Great God - to Whom we all owe so much. In some cases, it is referred to as “turkey day” or “football day”! How far this nation has descended since those earlier Presidents recognized just Who has given us our blessings!

I Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” In fact, it seems that we would like to obliterate the very Name of God in this country! There is a prophecy that warns of this very thing! Amos 6:1 “Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came.(verse 10) ... and shall say unto him that is by the sides of (inside) the house, is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, no. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.”

Believe it or not, this is speaking to the greatest nation on the earth at this time, the United States of America, where the ancient house of Israel (not the house Judah, or Jews) migrated to. (We’ll have to cover this subject later in a much larger format) This is at a future time, when this nation is being severely punished and gone into national captivity for their neglect in recognizing and THANKING GOD for all His Blessings

This nation has a form of “Godliness” - “Christian” houses of worship dot the landscape; some “mega-churches” have memberships of seven to eight thousand or more, but do you see a lot of CHANGE in their lives? Paul wrote in II Timothy 3:1 “This know, also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. (read verses 2 & 3) 4. Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. 5. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof; from such turn away

But we as God’s people should NEVER FORGET our Great God and REMEMBER from whence our blessings come, as we observe this very special Day -- Thanksgiving. It is in keeping with His Divine Instructions and He expects us to obey Him. Thanksgiving Day and all other days should be done in an attitude of thanksgiving.
