Return To:  Gospel And Modern Religion
Church of God, New World Ministries

The word "gospel" has nothing to do with modern religion!

Do you like gospel music? Have you ever attended a good old gospel tent meeting? Or, have you ever wanted to get someone to believe you and you may have responded to one of his or her questions by saying, “it’s the gospel”? Of course you were inferring that what you were saying was the TRUTH. It is clear by these definitions that the word gospel alludes to something “religious” (or at least that’s what most people think it means).

If you have a Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, look up the word gospel. You will find it used 101 times. You will also find the following: NT: 2097 euaggelizo (yoo-ang-ghel-id'-zo); from NT: 2095 and NT: 32; to announce good news ("evangelize") especially the gospel: declare, bring (declare, show) glad (good) tidings, preach (the gospel).

According to Strong’s the word gospel means to announce good news; declare, bring or show glad or good tidings. We read in Mark 16:15 the following:” And he said unto them (his apostles), Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Is that really in there?

It just doesn’t make sense. What does gospel music have to do with preaching the gospel? Or attending a good old tent meeting? Is telling the truth and gospel synonymous? In Matt 24:14 we read, “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

Applying the definition we obtained from Strong's, we see that this gospel (good news) of the kingdom “shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” The gospel of the kingdom of what? Mark 1:14 tells us, “Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. ” Jesus came preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. A kingdom has territory, subjects, laws, and a king or ruler. Apparently Christ wanted his apostles to preach about a coming kingdom of God. What is the kingdom of God? Is it heaven? If a kingdom has territory, subjects, laws and a ruler is it possible Christ was alluding to something else?
