Quarterly Letter - November 2016

November 2016
Greetings Everyone,
On November the 9th, 2016, the world woke up and was shocked beyond belief to learn that Donald J. Trump was elected President of the United States. Pundits said it was not possible. The experts chided him from the day he announced he was running; claiming he had no chance of winning. The polls reported that he was losing and could not win. Some predicted a landslide victory for Hillary Clinton!
And yet, he won! Some claimed it was a miracle! Was it? President-elect Trump’s victory along with Britain’s exit from the European Union certainly were against all odds. However, there is something that we need to remember. The ancient prophet Daniel was inspired to write, "This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men” (Dan. 4:17).
True Christians must follow Christ’s example (I Peter 2:21) and are not to be of this world (John 18:36), (Participate in the ungodly things of this world). However, we are told to “come out of this world” (Rev. 18:4) though we must live “in the world” (John 17:11). So, how does one follow Christ, praying for and looking toward the soon coming Kingdom of God, and yet still live in this present evil world?
Believe me, it is not an easy task. Christ said, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. These things I command you, that ye love one another. If the world hate you: ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also” (John 15:16-20).
Christ said, “Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Mat. (7:14). So, how should we look at the kingdoms or governments of this world? In Paul’s first letter to Timothy he exhorted him to “first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” ( I Tim. 2:1-4). Peter, likewise admonished us to “Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake; whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well” (I Peter 2:13-14).
Paul instructed the Church in Rome to, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God; the powers that be are ordained (ordered) of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good” (Rom. 13:1-4).
My friends, we are to be good citizens of the nation in which we live. We should obey all laws as long as they do not conflict with God’s laws (Acts 5:29). We should pray for our leaders in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. We should thank God that he has given us a possible reprieve to fulfill His commission to His church, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (Spirit): Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world…” (Mat 28:19-20).
Could this impossible election be a miracle? Did a man walk on water, turn water into wine, feed thousands with a few fishes and loaves of bread? Stranger things have happened! We shall see.
